In the group of Prof. Dr. Christian Clasen from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the KU Leuven in Belgium aims to understand the flow and mass transfer phenomena on the micro-time and micro-dimensional scale in order to design the structural and material properties of nano-scale fibres. In one specific research project they work on the systematic investigation of the electrospinning process by:

  • developing and enhancing optical techniques to observe the free surface flow of electrospinning on a micro- and sub microsecond level;
  • analyzing the viscous and elastic properties (rheology) of selected model polymers from renewable resources;
  • performing optical in-situ analysis of the electrospinning process;
  • utilizing the previous results in the design of specific nano-fibres from renewable resources.
